1847 – Zodiac Colony Founded

About 200 Mormons settled 4 miles southeast of Fredericksburg in 1847. Led by Elder Lyman Wight, who in 1850 became chief justice of Gillespie County, they built houses, a school, a temple and a saw and grist mill on the Pedernales. They called their town Zodiac. Zodiac was abandoned in 1853, after a catastrophic flood.
